Laser Warning Receiver (LWR)

Home > Use Cases > Laser Warning Receiver (LWR)

Case overview

Quadraticx, a technology company specializing in military and defense solutions, embarked on the development of a Laser Warning Receiver (LWR) system for a military organization. The project aimed to provide an advanced laser threat detection and warning solution, enhancing the safety and situational awareness of military vehicles and personnel in the field.

Challenges

Cover broader wavelength

Identify false threat

Classify threat type

Small and easy to install

Signal processing in nano-second order

Customer Needs

The primary needs identified from the customer’s perspective were:

  • Develop a robust laser threat detection system to protect military vehicles from laser-guided threats, such as designators, and beam-riding munitions.
  • The system needed to be highly responsive, providing real-time alerts about incoming laser threats.
  • Direction finding capability was essential to determine the source and direction of laser threats for effective response and situational awareness.
  • The LWR had to be integrated into the military vehicle’s existing systems and communicate threat data for coordinated responses.

Solution Elements

Quadraticx addressed these challenges and customer needs through the following key elements:

Optical Sensors

The LWR system included an array of optical sensors capable of detecting laser emissions from various directions. These sensors were strategically positioned on the military vehicle to provide comprehensive coverage.

Signal Processing Unit

The signal processing unit received data from the optical sensors, analyzed incoming laser signals, and identified key characteristics such as pulse rate and direction.

Direction Finding (DF) Capability

The LWR had a direction finding capability, allowing it to determine the source or direction of incoming laser threats, enhancing situational awareness and response effectiveness.

Display/Indicator

The LWR featured a visual indicator within the military vehicle's cabin to provide real-time warnings to operators. Visual cues included warning lights and on-screen alerts.

Audio Alarms

Audio alarms and alerts complemented the visual indicators, ensuring that operators could respond promptly to detected laser threats.

Integration Interfaces

The LWR system included integration interfaces, allowing it to communicate threat data with other vehicle systems. Data sharing and coordination were facilitated to respond to threats.

Self-Diagnostics and Built-in Test (BIT)

The LWR system incorporated built-in test features to monitor its performance and health. Self-diagnostic tests ran regularly to ensure the system's reliability.

The Results

The development of the Laser Warning Receiver (LWR) by Quadraticx delivered a state-of-the-art laser threat detection and warning system that met and exceeded the customer’s needs and expectations. The key outcomes include:

  • Real-time Threat Detection: The LWR provided instant detection and warning of laser threats, allowing for rapid response and protection of military vehicles and personnel.
  • Enhanced Situational Awareness: The direction-finding capability enabled the determination of threat sources, improving overall situational awareness.
  • Integration and Communication: The LWR seamlessly integrated with vehicle systems and communicated threat data for coordinated responses and command center coordination.
  • Operator Safety and Effectiveness: The system’s warnings and alarms enhanced operator safety and responsiveness during missions.

Quadraticx team successfully delivered a crucial military technology solution, contributing to the safety and operational effectiveness of the military organization’s missions.
